AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON GARDENS AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN

compiled and annotated by

Jeff Garner Ph.D.

NOTES ON THE SCOPE AND USE OF THIS BIBLIOGRAPHY

This annotated bibliography was compiled (while I was a graduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara) as a guide for the researcher of the history and development of gardens and garden design (landscape architecture) from an art historical viewpoint. The books reviewed were located by a subject search using "gardens" and "landscape architecture" as the subject heading, so as to provide a broad base of material. Each book was then assessed as to its historical or theoretical approach, the type of information it contains, and the way in which it is organized, so as to guide the researcher more easily to the works suited to the research goal.

The compilation was done several years ago now, and has not been updated, but while it was first published on the web, it was visited very regularly, indicating that many found it useful. Therefore, although it is certainly not current, I offer it again for those who might gain some benefit from it.

Books included or excluded:

The primary qualification for inclusion was that a book have information, either written or pictorial, on gardens, their development, or on garden design and its development. Those that are strictly instruction manuals for the benefit of the gardener were not included, unless they contain a significant amount of philosophical or historical theory on why the garden should be made by the methods presented. These, although they were few, were included as I considered them useful to someone in search of the cultural backgrounds of garden design.

Books that are strictly lists of gardens, such as lists of botanical gardens in America, without any historical information on them, were not included, nor were books that were strictly about botany or horticulture, or the histories of those sciences.

Many of the books on the subjects of town planning, urban development, environmental design, and related topics were not included for much the same reasons as those on garden construction or horticulture. They are a rich source of information and theory, however, and the researcher is recommended to that area for further investigation.

Similarly, the subject search did not necessarily locate books on certain people who are important in the field. The user of this bibliography is urged, therefore, to search under the names of the people who figure in the books found here.

Only those books that are in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish were included, as I do not have the ability to do any kind of assessment of them otherwise, (and my limitations in some of those languages will have rendered some of the annotations less effective). Fortunately, due to the proliferation of translations into English and German, this personal shortcoming only eliminated a very few books.

All of the books listed here are on the shelves of the libraries at UCSB, though by no means does this list represent all of the books held that address these topics, and the researcher is directed to the bibliographies in the books they choose from this list, and to proceed from those via title or keyword searches. Those books that were not available for review, but which seemed likely to be useful, were included with such notation as could be drawn from the library catalog information, and so noted. Books that are in themselves bibliographies were also included, without annotation, in a separate section.

The annotations:

I have used certain terms to describe the books' organization and methodology without pretending that my terms will be in accord with any set classifications: I have tried only to guide the researcher, in a broad way, to the type of works appropriate to the task at hand. I have used the term "traditional" to denote the common, chronological, reporting-the-accepted-facts type of historical text, and the term "modern" to denote the more recent, contextualized, or analytical historical methods, and where it seemed the author was analyzing some particular aspect of the topic in a critical way. In a few cases, I have termed a work "positivist," meaning that it placed a very strong emphasis on the sequence and causality of historical events in the development of the gardens, understanding that my use of the term may not agree with others. Likewise, my use of such terms as "critical" or "analytical" should be read in the common sense, and not as an attempt to locate the work in a particular historical discipline. My use of these terms should not be construed as judgements of the quality or accuracy of the work, merely as a very general classification of the type of approach taken. My use of terms such as "well illustrated" and "thorough" are quantitative, so as to indicate the volume of information the researcher can expect to find. I have always indicated the presence of notes, indices, and bibliographies, as this is indicative of the accessability of the information and paths to further sources. If a book stood out, in my opinion, as particularly useful or particularly limited, I commented as such. In no wise should my indications be taken as a qualitative judgement on the work of the authors, even where my preferences in style show in my comments, as the quick perusal this compilation required allowed for no such assessment.

The call numbers are Libarary of Congress numbers, and the indication 'AEC' signifies that the work is an Art Exhibition Catalog (the numbers following this code are specific to the UCSB Arts Library collection).

It is my intention and hope that this will serve, not as an individual tool, but as a companion to aid the efficacy of the researcher's other searches, facilitating the pinpointing of useful materials.

A note on the distribution and updating of this document:

This work is not copyrighted as such, and is intended for distribution, in whole or in part, by and to anyone who finds it useful, in any medium, printed or electronic. If you chose to print it for use by students or colleagues, or publish it on a web site, or distribute it on disc, I ask that you be sure to include the notes on its scope and use. I would also appreciate acknowledgment of my authorship.

Comments and corrections are welcomed and encouraged. In particular, after the use of a book found in this list for research, if the researcher would add further notation as to its actual usefulness, or correct any mistaken assessments on my part, it would render the list all the more valuable. If you are already familiar with a book included here, or especially if you are the author or editor of one of the books, it would be very much appreciated if you would comment on it, particularly if you think that my annotation is in some way erroneous or misleading. If you know of a book, or discover a book in your research, that should be included, please feel free to send the bibliographic information and annotation to me for addition to the original.
